Swimming, Year 2
Big day today ... Michael went swimming for the first time this season!!!
He swam a lot last year, when he was only a few months old. I was a bit apprehensive about how he would take to the water since kids change so much over just a few months.
Last time he swam (well, okay, kicked his feet as I held him and carried him around the shallow end of the pool), he couldn't even walk at that point. Now he's walking and running all over the place, climbing up sofas and everything.
I tried to take him swimming last month. I just took him in the water for like 10 seconds and he didn't like it, so we took him out, changed him, and took him home. I think the water might have been a bit on the cold side for a toddler. It was fine for me ... I've been swimming since April, but we figured we'd wait some more. So today was the perfect day for swimming.
There were 2 other Dads in the pool with young kids (one with a 2 year old son, the other with a 5 year old daughter), and I chatted with them a bit about their efforts to get their children to swim.
Michael had a blast! He mostly stood on one of the steps in the shallow end until he was submerged to his chest, and proceeded to splash the water on the side. He also took my swim goggle case and would submerge it underwater until it was full, and lift it up and watch the water flow out. That made him giggle. Then I let him pour the water from the goggle case on my head. That made him laugh.
One thing that was funny was he dropped the swim goggles onto the step, right at his feet. So, he knelt down just like he would at home, and was startled because his head went underwater. He popped his head back up, surprised, because he didn't realize that kneeling down in the pool is different than doing so at home. He tried again, and this time came up coughing. So I helped him get it.
Had him under extremely close supervision the whole time, so I wasn't worried about letting him get used to the water.
He probably got a good half-hour of pool time.
