Bobbing and 52 Card Pickup
Went swimming again this evening. All this time, I've kept Michael from dunking his head in the water because Mommy and Grandma keep saying it will scare him. I've always thought it's not a bad thing to get him used to the water, including getting his head wet.
That's the only way to learn. When I was young and my mom signed me up for swimming lessons, the first thing the instructor did was hold onto me and "bob" my head under the water. I HATED IT and it made me cry.
Well, Michael really hasn't shown any aversion to getting his face wet while in the pool. He loves being tossed up in the air and caught, and tries to open his mouth and get as much pool water splashed in his mouth as possible (which, incidentally, drives Mommy nuts).
So, I figured it's time for Michael to try a bob. I held onto him and blew lightly on his face (read someplace that's a good idea since it encourages kids to hold their breath for a moment). I counted to three and went under the water and started to bring him under. I looked up, and had a split-second mental photograph of him closing his eyes and laughing, right before he went under the water. He seemed really excited about going under the water. I got about his mouth and nose under the water for less than a second (didn't even get his eyes under), and he started to cough so I hopped up with him immediately and started patting his back, like when I burp him.
He was fine, definitely a bit startled, but not too unhappy.
We went home, and he got ahold of our deck of cards. I laughed because the outside box of the playing cards advertised the cards as "Long Lasting". I don't think they figured toddler usage into the "Long Lasting claim". Michael tossed the cards about, the only card game he knows so far is 52 card pickup. ;-)
