Chicago!

Michael took his first plane trip this week!

I went to a software development conference in Chicago (Spring One), and decided to bring the whole family with me. Company paid for my plane ticket, I bought plane tickets for the rest of the family. Figured that they could go and sightsee while I was at the conference.

We left insanely early (flight took of around 6:40 AM) on Tuesday. We woke up around 3 AM. Michael was surprisingly good for being awake at that hour. He woke up pretty much on his own ... when we were loading the suitcases into the car and picking up items around the house and doing last-minute preparation, he could sense the excitement in the air.

He was pretty good on the flight to Chicago. I held him in my lap. He didn't really cry, and was just constantly scanning everything, taking in his surroundings. We fed him cookies while the plane was taking off. The doctor said it's better if he is chewing on something, makes the flight easier on his ears. So we gave him cookies. It's easy to get him to eat cookies.

He was fascinated with the tray tables on the Southwest Airlines plane, and kept pulling it up and down. Eventually, I think he got on the nerves of the old lady who had the seat in front of him ... she ended up changing seats. Fortunately the flight was only half-full (not too many people like being on a 6:40 AM flight).

The only time Michael really cried/fussed was when we started eating beef jerkey. Mommy took out a bag of beef jerkey, and gave some to me, Grandma, Grandpa, and ate some herself. I guess Michael didn't think it was fair that he got overlooked (obviously we can't give him beef jerkey), so he pitched a fit at that point. I think we got him to calm down by feeding him cookies.

We arrived at the hotel around 9 AM local time Tuesday and did a blitz-tour of the city.

We stayed at the Chicago Marriott Downtown on Magnificent Mile. In the lobby, they have this really cool illuminated staircase. Michael entertained himself by walking up and down the stairs. He has a fascination with stairs. Loves walking up and down them. He could do that for hours, if we let him.

I figured I had to be in class the next 3 days, so I wanted to get some sightseeing done with the family that first day. The conference registration went until 6:30 PM, so we had an entire day to tour the city. Went to Chinatown, and Millennium Park.

The first night, Michael cried a lot, probably because he wasn't used to sleeping in the hotel bed. There were 3 people in the double-sized bed (Grandma, Grandpa, Michael), so he was probably pretty crampt.

The next few days my wife and her parents took Michael around the city. They said that he enjoyed eating at Chinatown each day, and would eat a lot, and then fall asleep for a long nap. It was pretty cold the entire trip. Unfortunately since I was attending the conference, I only heard about their adventures in the evening.
