Read book, read book

Michael is such a great communicator. He can clearly articulate his needs in both English and Chinese. He can express himself in phrases, and on occasion, full sentences. He often tells me "read book, read book" (he loves to read). He can pretty much sit and be captivated as I read books to him for a long period of time, which is amazing because he has a very short attention span.

If I'm sitting on a chair and he wants my attention, (like this evening when I was eating dinner), he'll tug on my hand and say "Daddy come down" or "Daddy play".

He also understands object location. If he can't find Henry (his green toy train), he will say "Where train go? Where train go?"

When he wants something, he will point to it and say THIS ... THIS.

He's also got a wide assortment of phrases in Chinese.

I've been speaking to him only in English (except when I'm tired), and letting my wife and her parents speak to him in Chinese. It seems to have helped him tremendously. My mom suggested it, to help him speak both languages without an accent (I'm a native English speaker, my wife and her parents are native Chinese speakers).

Oh, one of those funny from-Michael's-childhood that I'm sure he'll always remember ... when I'm reading to him, we love coming upon butterflies in his stories. Many toddler books feature butterflies as characters. Anytime we find one, he will point vigorously at it and I'll say "MMMM ... Butterfly, butterfly, land on your head" and put my hands together, crossed at the thumb and waive the hands like a butterfly and gently land on his head. That makes him laugh.

He got to see real butterflies a week ago at the park and really got a kick out of that. He'd shake the tree branch and watch the butteflies fly away and giggle.
