Second day of Daycare
It was tough to get Michael out of the house today. When we told him he was going to school, he locked himself in his room. I had to go and get one of those things the builder gave us for "opening the locked doors in the house, in case a kid locks themselves in a room."
Never needed it before having kids. Now that I have kids, I see why those are necessary/mandatory.
Managed to get him to school around 8:30 AM again. Teacher said he only cried for 5 minutes after we left. I am SO proud of him. He's been participating in the school activities, eating, playing. The teacher, and the school director said his behavior is 110% normal. :-D and separation anxiety is expected at his age if he's never been in daycare or school before. They said he calms down pretty quickly.
They also said he took his nap immediately. That must mean he's comfortable at the school. They had naptime, and teacher said he was asleep in 2 minutes, after he ate he went right to sleep on his mat with his blanket.
Only slight oddity is that he insists on carrying his backpack everywhere with him. The teacher said he would do everything, lugging his backpack along with him. They said it's a comfort/security thing for him, and don't seem concerned about it. I couldn't imagine it would be much fun carrying a backpack everywhere all day, but if it makes him more comfortable at school, it's fine with me.
I've noticed he's speaking much more English at home. I always spoke to him in English (at least recently), and he would answer back to me in Cantonese. We would have entire conversations where I would ask him a question in English, and he would reply in Cantonese. However, I've noticed that he's a lot more inclined to speak English with me, even after only 2 days of school.
The teacher did mention that if he gets upset, he'll speak in Cantonese, and she'll explain to him that she doesn't understand, so he'll go back to English. Thought that was funny.
