Made-up words

Michael is going through a stage where he makes up words.

One example is "Gyrograss."

He uses them very authoritatively, like he'll point at the sky and say "Look, Daddy, it's a Gyrograss!"

If I ask him "what is a Giragrass?" and don't pronounce it exactly like he pronounced it, he will correct me and say, "No, a Gyrograss!"  As I continue to repeat what he said and refine it so it sounds more and more like what he said, he will patiently keep saying "No, a Gyrograss!", until I've said it exactly like he did.

He's pretty patient and polite about correcting me (and Mommy) when we mispronounce his made up words.  Actually, his correcting us really seems a lot like when we correct his pronunciation or grammar, repetitive cycles of refinement until it is correct.

All of his words sound plausible.  Michael's made-up words tend to follow the cadence and match the structure of an actual English word.  More often than not, they tend to be longer words that are in part based on a real word.

I think I'm going to start keeping a log of his made-up words to share with him when he gets older.
